Basic Information:
Gao Xuanyang, born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is a distinguished overseas teacher authorized by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, and a chair professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University from August, 2010. Currently, he is the dean of Institute for Advanced Study in European Culture of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. From 2004 to July, 2010, he was a distinguished Chinese-French expert of Tong Ji University and the then dean of Academy of European Culture and the director of Research Center for French Culture and Ideology of Tong Ji University. He is skilled in English, French, Russian and Indonesian. In the past nearly 30years, he has been taking a continuously pragmatic observation and analysis on society, culture and politics in France, Germany, Britain and America, and he has long been involved in interdisciplinary research on philosophy and humanities and social sciences.
Current Research Field: Contemporary French Philosophy, History of German Philosophy, Contemporary Social Theory and Art Criticism
Main Experience:
1957-1962 M.A. in philosophy, Peking University
From 1962 to May, 1966, he was a graduate student of philosophy and specialized in the philosophy of Kant instructed by Professor Zheng Xin.
From 1965 to March, 1978, he worked as a researcher in Institute of World Religions, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and specialized in the research of Islam and Christian under the leadership of Professor Ren Jiyu.
In the spring of 1978, he returned to China in the name of returned overseas Chinese for visiting relatives. During his stay in Hong Kong from 1978 to 1979, he acted as the chief editor of Hong Kong Cosmos Books Ltd and Joint Publishing(Hong Kong) Company Ltd and hosted the publication of Book Series of Humanities(6 books in total). In the meantime, he worked as a distinguished professor in Department of Philosophy, Department of Political Science and Department of Sociology in Chinese University of Hong Kong, giving courses in history of western philosophy, contemporary social theory and contemporary political philosophy.
From 1979 to 1983, he studied for doctor degree in philosophy in Pantheon-Sorbonne University and researched in the critical theory of Max Horkheimer of Frankfurt School instructed by Professor Irene Veidrin and got his doctor degree with doctoral dissertation On the Features of Materailism in June, 1983.
From 1983 to 1985, he hosted Le seminaire sur la philosophie chinoise contemporaine entrusted by Derrida, dean of Paris International Institute of Philosophy, and published his research and teaching achievement in the first and second edition of Cahier du College international, published by Editions Osiris.
From 1985 to 1995, while hosting the above post, he also acted as adjunct professor, and worked as an researcher in Centre de la recherche sur la philosophie politique directed by Professor Georges Labica, the first vice president of Paris West University Nanterre La Défense, and published his achievement in Etudier Marx and De Marx au marxisme and was published by Editions du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in 1985 and 1986 respectively.
From 1989 to 2002, while hosting the above post in France, invited by National Science Council, he worked as a State Research Professor in Soochow University, and acted as an adjunct professor in National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University.
From 2002 to 2004, invited by Renmin University of China, Peking University and Minzu University of China, he gave courses in French philosophy, French sociology and anthropology in the above three universities.
From July, 2004 to June, 2010, he was appointed as the dean of dean of Academy of European Culture with the identity of a distinguished overseas teacher of State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.

Awards
In 2009, his book Foucault’s Aesthetics of Existence( published by Renmin University of China in 2005) won the third award of Scientific Research Achievement of Higher Institutions, grated by Ministry of Education
In 2007, his book Introduction to Contemporary French Philosophy( published by Tongji University Press in 2004) won recognition reward of Wu Yuzhang Humanities and Social Sciences Prize, granted by Wu Yuzhang Fund Committee.
